Wasatch-Cache National Forest

Joe Witt of the UTMA invited me to help him with some volunteer work he had been doing for the Wasatch-Cache
National Forest Service on the Stansbury Front Trail. We installed and labeled carsonite markers at
the trail heads and at wilderness boundrys, repaired some vandalism, and placed rocks and logs at some
of the trail heads to discourage ATV abuse. Then we did some inventory on the trails at the north end
and we were able to make a loop around to the west side using existing trails.

The Wasatch Crest Trail is an epic ride along the ridge top of the mountains above Salt Lake City and
is only open to non-motorized users. This popular trail is best as a shuttle with the first vehicle
dropping bikers near Guardsman pass and a second vehicle at the bottom of Mill Creek Canyon which is
only open to mountain bikes on even days. We always ride the Pipeline trail in Mill Creek Canyon after
riding the Crest. Looping back to Big Cottonwood canyon on the Mill D trail is also a great ride with
a much shorter shuttle.

My friend Shawn Vincent and I were a little too eager one year riding the trail in early June. We found
deep snow and huge drifts covering much of the trail. Although we were feeling pretty foolish and exhausted
after barely making it off the mountain in the dark, we were proud to have been the first mountain bikers
of the year to cross this trail.
