Ruxton Noble's 1989 Toyota 4Runner SR5

4Runner on Devil's Racetrack

For the past eight years, My 4Runner has been impressing me with its dependablity and performance.  I've put over 170,000 miles on it with many of those miles on some of the most remote roads in Utah's backcountry.  I often go alone and I have trusted it to always bring me back safely.  The 4Runner's been through a few changes since I bought it.  I've selected a few photos of significant events and modifications that made the vehicle what it is today.  Check out the rest of my website for more photos of my adventures with my 4Runner.

Picking it up from the dealer
I purchased the 4Runner January 11, 1994.  It had 63254.9 miles when I picked it up.

Its first trip to Moab
Its first trip to Moab was in February, 1994.  Moab had been hit by one of their worst snow storms.   It made for some cold biking.
Just lifted
The first modification (besides the bike rack) was a 2" suspension lift.  The Downey springs and torsion bars were installed April, 1995.
Its first trip to Hole In The Rock
Its first major four-wheeling trip was to Hole In The Rock in April, 1995.  It struggled due to limited flex and open differentials.  I considered selling it.
Picking up the 4Runner after the gears and lockers were installed.
Lockers, front and rear, along with 4.88 gears were installed September, 1996.  This has been a dramatic improvement to the 4Runner's off-road performance.
Second trip to Hole In The Rock
In October, 1996 I returned to Hole In The Rock.  This time the 4Runner amazed me with its new off-roading abilities.
5th Annual 4Runner Jamboree near Barstow
In April, 1997, I attended the 5th annual 4Runner Jamboree in California.  Since then I have attended the 6th, 7th, and 8th 4Runner Jamborees.
Deer Damaged
In November, 1997, the 4Runner hit a deer near I-70 on the way to the Grand Staircase Monument.  Fortunately we were able to keep going.
Towing the Mustang to California
The 4Runner proved its reliablity when I used it to tow a car to Los Angeles in May, 1998.  It didn't break any speed limits getting there.
Fixed and Primered
The deer damage was repaired and it was quickly primered black in time for the 6th annual 4Runner Jamboree, July, 1998.
Matt changing my rear springs
In January, 1999, I replaced the sagging Downey springs with NWOR 3" springs.  The springs were too stiff and gave me too much lift so I removed a leaf.
Installation of the 32" BFG MTs
After my 31" BFG All Terrains wore out with 40k+ miles, I installed 32" BFG Mud Terrains in January, 1999.  I have had no problems with these tires.
Testing the suspension with a fork-lift
After much experimenting I finally got the NWOR springs to flex respectably.  However two leaves in the right pack broke within a few months.
Midnight crossing of the Golden Crack
In April, 1999 at Jeep Safari, I drove the Golden Spike trail for the first time, at night.  It was unplanned since we lost the way back to Poison Spider.
Just installed the ARB bumper and Warn winch
In April, 1999 I installed an ARB bumper for deer protection and a Warn XD9000 winch for some peace of mind on my solo trips.  Hopefully I never use them.
Broken torsion bar mount
In June, 1999, the 4Runner broke a torsion bar mount in the Grand Staircase Monument.  This has been the only breakage I have had with the IFS.
Little Valley Canyon on Rec. Rd. 262
Later in June after reparing the torsion bar mount, I returned to the Grand Staircase Monument and conquered Recreation Road 262 on my own.
All-Pro Offroad rear bumper installed
In March, 2000, I replaced the busted trailer hitch and twisted stock tinfoil bumper with an All-Pro rear bumper.
Valve Job
The 4Runner had a burnt valve so RMH4X4 performed a valve job, replaced the head gasket and t-belt December, 2000, two years after the Toyota dealer did.
PIAA Off-Road Lights
In October, 2001, PIAA 80 Pro XT off-road lights were installed along with PIAA Super White headlight bulbs and a Painless Wiring headlight harness.
New BFG Mud Terrains
The new redesigned BFG Mud Terrains replaced my old set, which had more than 50k miles, in October, 2001.  So far I really like these tires.
